PFAS are a large group of synthetic chemicals used for decades in industrial processes and consumer products because of their resistance to heat, water, grease and stains. Why Test Drinking Water for PFAS?

PFAS contamination cannot be identified by the appearance, taste or smell of water. Clear water with no noticeable odor can still contain measurable concentrations. How do I know if my drinking water has PFAS?

PFAS cannot be identified by color, taste or odor. The way to determine whether the compounds included in a selected PFAS method are present is to collect the water properly and have it analyzed by a qualified environmental laboratory.

Is PFAS included in a normal water test?

Usually not. PFAS analysis is a specialized laboratory service and must be specifically included in the testing scope. A routine potability or private-well panel may not include PFAS unless it is expressly ordered.

Can I test a private well for PFAS?

Yes. Private wells can be tested for PFAS, particularly where there is concern about nearby industrial activity, airports, firefighting foam use, landfills or other known or suspected sources.
Why is PFAS water testing measured in parts per trillion?
Many PFAS drinking-water benchmarks and laboratory reporting limits are extremely low, so results are commonly expressed in parts per trillion. That sensitivity is one reason PFAS sampling and laboratory handling require dedicated procedures.
